Dogecoin on Linux - The Complete Beginner's Guide

I'm writing this because I couldn't find a single condensed guide on compiling the wallet and running mining software on linux, specficially Ubuntu/Linux Mint. I combed Bitcoin and Litecoin forums for similar problems I was running into and eventually got everything nailed down, so here it is in one place, for new Shibes.
If you want to make a Dogecoin directory in your downloads folder to keep things organized, you will need to modify these commands to refelct the change. So instead of going to ~/Downloads/ you will need to go to ~/Downloads/Dogecoin and be sure to put the zipped files there when you download them, but the commands will be the same otherwise.
cwayne18 put in the work to make a PPA for the QT client here.
Ubunutu/Mint/Debian users should be able to install the client with the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cwayne18/doge sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install dogecoin-qt 
To update using this method, run
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade dogecoin-qt 
Compiling the Wallet Manually
I suggest using the PPA above, but if you want to compile manually, here you go.
1)Download the newest source from here. If you want to check out the Github page, click here
2)Unzip the package with the native client OR, navigate to your downloads and unzip
cd ~/Downloads unzip 
3)Now it's time to compile. You will need to install the dependencies, just copy and paste the following code. It will be a fairly large download and could take some time. It is always important to update before installing any new software, so we'll do that first and then install the dependencies.
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install libssl-dev libdb-dev libdb++-dev libqrencode-dev qt4-qmake libqtgui4 libqt4-dev sudo apt-get install libminiupnpc-dev libminiupnpc8 libboost-all-dev build-essential git libboost1.53-all-dev 
4)Once that is done, go to the doge-coin master directory and compile:
cd ~/Downloads/dogecoin-maste sed -i 's/-mgw46-mt-sd-1_53//g' qmake USE_UPNP=- USE_QRCODE=0 USE_IPV6=0 make -j3 
After running the qmake command you will likely see some text similar to
Project MESSAGE: Building without UPNP support Project MESSAGE: Building with UPNP supportRemoved plural forms as the target language has less forms. If this sounds wrong, possibly the target language is not set or recognized. 
It's perfectly normal, so don't worry about that.
Your Dogewallet is ready to go! The executable is in ~/Downloads/dogecoin-maste and called dogecoin-qt. Your wallet information is in ~/.dogecoin. You can run the wallet at any time by opening terminal and typing
cd ~/Downloads/dogecoin-maste ./dogecoin-qt 
Future upgrades to dogewallet are easy. Back up your wallet.dat, and simply follow the same directions above, but you'll be unzipping and building the newer version. You will likely need to rename the old dogecoin-master directory in ~/Downloads before unzipping the newest version and building. Also, it is likely that you will not need to install the dependencies again.
Alternate Method For Installing Dogecoin Wallet from Nicebreakfast
After installing the dependencies listed in step 3, open terminal, then navigate to where you want Dogecoin Wallet stored and run:
git clone ./ ./configure make 
then when the wallet is updated just run
git pull 
from the dogecoin directory.
GPU Mining
GPU mining requires CGminer. My suggestion is to get the executable already built. The creator of cgminer has removed the built file from his website, but I've uploaded it here
sudo apt-get install pkg-config opencl-dev libcurl4-openssl-dev autoconf libtool automake m4 ncurses-dev cd ~/Downloads tar -xvf cgminer-3.7.2-x86_64-built.tar.bz2 
Don't use anything newer than 3.7.2. The newer versions of CGMiner don't support GPU mining.
That's it! You have cgminer ready to go! You will run cgminer with the following syntax
cd ~/Downloads/cgminer-3.7.2-x86_64-built/ ./cgminer --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://SERVERNAME:PORT -u WORKER.ID -p PASS 
A good guide for fine tuning cgminer can be found here; follow the litecoin example.
I had trouble getting cgminer running with a single line command, but running it via an executable .sh file works. This is covered in the cgminer setup guide I posted above but I'll put it here too. In the same directory that has the cgminer executable, you need to make a file called and make it executable. It should contain the follwing:
export GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1 export GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT=100 export DISPLAY=:0 find *.bin -delete sleep 5 ./cgminer 
Then you can call cgminer in terminal by doing ./ You will need a cgminer.conf file containing all your options. All of this is covered in the guide that is linked above.
A quick note about AMD drivers: They used to be a huge PITA to install and get working, but the newest Catalyst drivers are great. There's a GUI installer, everything works out of the box, and there is a lot of documentation. You can download them here: AMD Catalyst 14.6 Beta Linux
CPU Mining
For CPU mining I use minerd because it doesn't require any work to get running, simply download it and get to work. Download the built file for your machine 32-bit or 64-bit, and then unzip it and you're ready to go!
cd ~/Downloads tar -xvf pooler-cpuminer-2.3.2-linux-x86.tar.gz 
The executable is called minerd and it will be in ~/Downloads but you can move it to wherever you like. To run it, pull up terminal and do
cd ~/Downloads minerd --url=stratum+tcp://SERVER:PORT --userpass=USERNAME.WORKERNAME:WORKERPASSWORD 
You're done! Happy mining!
Common Issues
I ran into this and I've seen others with this problem as well. Everything installs fine but there is a shared library file that isn't where it should be. In fact, it isn't there at all. cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory 
In terminal, do
sudo updatedb locate 
And it will probably return a path /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu. Inside that directory there's a library file called You'll need to make a symlink (aka shortcut) that links to So, assuming you're working with do this
cd /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu sudo ln -s 
Now if you do
ln -l 
You should see -> ./ 
Meaning you've made the symlink. Also, the text for will be blue.

Unable to mine for Bitcoin Classic on Multipool with cgminer... am I missing something?

Hi guys, I'm trying some mining pools to see which is the best for my needs. After testing Slush, today I registered on to start mining there. I set up my worker, added my wallet address and checked out the mining URLs here, where it says:
Bitcoin: stratum+tcp:// Bitcoin (Classic): stratum+tcp:// 
I want to mine Bitcoin Classic and I'm using a little USB miner called Gekko 2-Ppac (which uses two BM1384 chips and works at around 26Gh/s), so I started cgminer with the following command (obviously replacing user.worker with my real user and worker names):
cgminer -o stratum+tcp:// -u user.worker -p x 
It starts, detects the miner, and then just says "waiting for work to be available from pools", but the pool doesn't look like responding. After a minute or two it just gives up and says to press any key to quit.
I tried some more configs changing the password (which is actually not required so it shouldn't be the problem), the worker name etc, but it doesn't look like it's working. I then tried to mine Bitcoin (not classic) using the port 3332 (see above) and the exact same command, and the miner started running without a problem at the expected speed.
Is there something I'm missing about Bitcoin Classic that is required to mine? Could that be something about my USB miner? I don't think so, I mean it's still SHA-256 so there shouldn't be any problem. What should I do?

I want to get back at an unwanted miner.

I'm a CS professor at a local junior college. I noticed a few months ago that a few of the machines in the computer labs were running a little harder than an idle machine should be. After a little poking around, I found that someone had stuck a bitcoin client deep into some of the program folders.
I removed the files, but a few weeks later I discovered that now all the machines were running the client (CGMiner, btw) with the files sitting in the same location. I got IT to go over them with a scheduled wipe and clean everything out. Afterwards I left a little note in the folders as a mild deterrent and warning.
Things were peaceful for a few months, but then the other day I once again heard the whirring of an idle machine that was working a little too hard and, viola, once again all the machines were running the client and the miner left me a little comeback.
So now I'm a little pissed, since this guy is putting undue stress our lab computers that probably have short lifespan to begin with. Unfortunately, I haven't really interacted with bitcoin all that much, so I don't know how to easily get back at him. What I do know is that the client has a config file listing, among the various settings, a username and password which I assume is somehow connected to an account or wallet or something.

My biggest concern is that whoever is doing this is not a student, but faculty, or worse yet, part of the IT department. Regardless of who it is, I want to make clear to them that mining on these computers will lead to them having a very bad day.
This is the part where I need your help /Bitcoin. My ultimate goal would be to uncover the identity of whoever is doing this, but that may be a bit of a longshot. At the very least, I'm hoping that the info in the config file can somehow lead to an account that could either be hijacked, suspended, deleted, etc.

(Dummies Guide) How to simultaneously run multiple instances of cgminer to control different GPUs whilst using BAMT.

In cgminer you cannot specify multiple values for gpu-threads. gpu-threads is a global per-instance setting, not a per-GPU setting. If you want to run 2 different values of gpu-threads, you need to run 2 instances of cgminer.
This guide will help you if, for example; you have a rig in which one or more of your cards run better with gpu-threads set to 1 and your other cards run better with gpu-threads set to 2 (or 3 or 4)
So I'm going to assume here that you're running a rig with 4 cards and you're already set up and mining.
I'm also going to assume that you know how to use nano. So let's say your cgminer.conf has the line "gpu-threads" : "2", Unfortunately your 4th card isn't giving you the hash-rate you're expecting from it or worse, you're getting hardware errors which lead to rejected shares.
(to see if you're getting hardware errors in BAMT, you need to be able to see what cgminer is actually displaying. To do this simply SSH to your rig, log in and type "screen -r". I won't go too into this to much but where it says HW: you don't want so see anything there, if you're seeing anything other than 0 then you have problems with your config. Now to detach from this screen you need to press "ctrl+A+D" this is very important, do not press q!)
Anyway, you know that the 4th card wants to run with "gpu-threads" : "1", but you can't do "gpu-threads" : "2,2,2,1", this will not work!
So to get 2 cgminers running, follow these steps:
  1. SSH to your rig, be logged in, and a super user. You should be seeing this: [email protected]:/home/user#
  2. Type "nano /etc/bamt/cgminer.conf" Add the line: "device" : "0-2", This is saying that this instance of cgminer will be controlling GPUs 0, 1 & 2. Save and exit (ctrl+x)
  3. Type "nano" This will create a new script that you will run later to boot up your 2nd cgminer. Now type "chmod u+x" and hit enter.
  4. Add your info. below is mine but you want to replace with the settings for your 4th card (gpu 3): (where it says "device 3" this is saying that this instance of cgminer will only run gpu 3 (4th card) and "remove-disabled" makes it so it won't display the other cards)
    export DISPLAY=:0 export GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1 export GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT=100 export CGMINER_BIN=/opt/miners/cgminecgminer $CGMINER_BIN --scrypt \ -o -u username -p password \ -o backupminingpoolserver:3333 -u username -p password \ -I 20 \ -w 512 \ --gpu-threads 1 \ --thread-concurrency 32765 \ --gpu-engine 990 \ --gpu-memclock 1500 \ --gpu-powertune 11 \ --gpu-vddc 1.025 \ --device 3 \ --remove-disabled \ --temp-cutoff 99 \ --temp-overheat 95 \ --temp-target 85 \ --auto-fan \ --gpu-fan 50-85 
    Note: Make sure there are no random spaces at the end of any of these lines and also make sure that the I for intensity is upper case.
    Now save and exit the script by hitting ctrl+x etc.
  5. type "screen -ls" and hit enter, you should see something similar to this:
    There are screens on: 4366.pts-1.bamt-miner (12/30/2013 08:00:56 PM) (Detached) 1 Sockets in /varun/screen/S-root. 
    So this is saying that there is currently only 1 screen running and BAMT is using it to run cgminer inside.
  6. Type "screen" and hit enter, it will come up with a load of text about screen, just ignore that and hit enter again. Now you are inside your new 2nd screen.
  7. Now type ./ You should now see cgminer boot up and start mining with just gpu 3. To detach from this screen you need to hit ctrl+a+d.
And that's it, there should now be 2 screens running.
To check the other screen type "screen -ls" and hit enter, you should now see both screens running. Something like this:
There are screens on: 6349.cgminer (12/30/2013 08:08:35 PM) (Detached) 4366.pts-1.bamt-miner (12/30/2013 08:00:56 PM) (Detached) 2 Sockets in /varun/screen/S-root. 
To look at one screen type "screen -r 6349", to look at the other type "screen -r 4366" (remember to detach from screens using ctrl+a+d)
You should still be able to see info for the first 3 cards on BAMT's web UI and in fact I can still see the temp and load for my 4th card.

I have a beagleboard that came as part of a bitcoin mining appliance and I broke linux. Offering a reward for the solution.

I received a brand new KnC Saturn bitcoin miner TODAY. I promptly logged into ssh to configure the miner and made a mistake that has caused the appliance not to boot.
I am willing to offer $200 in reward, by paypal or bitcoin to the person or persons who helps me get this miner working. If it starts working, I will award the entire sum to those who helped in a sum divisible at my discretion.
This is the KncMiner Saturn, the miner I received today.

I have no experience with beagle boards, though I am comfortable with Raspberry Pi's, and pretty comfortable with linux (though I'm questioning that considering my current predicament).
Here's a synopsis:
The beagleboard runs a custom linux firmware developed by KnCminer with a bitcoin mining program called cgminer. The interface is accessible primarily from a web interface, secondarily by ssh.
I am nearly certain that the only problem is that I removed a file that the board is searching for on boot. There is a directory called /config/ that directory contains mining configuration files.
I issued
mv /config/cgminer.conf.factory /config/cgminer.conf 
which effectively deleted /config/cgminer.conf.factory. This has rendered they system only partially bootable. The system lights up and it responds to ping, but I cannot access the system by ssh or by the web interface.
I believe that all I need to do is to get into the beaglebone and cp the cgminer.conf file back to cgminer.conf.factory in order to enable regular boot.
In addition, I may have exacerbated the problem by attempting a hardware reset described on page 5 of this manual.
The company, KncMiner, does offer a support page with clean firmwares, but I don't know how to apply any of these to a non-working system.
I am more than willing to answer any questions. As I stated, I will award $200 in bitcoin or paypal to the person or persons who helps me get this miner working. The payout will only occur if this thread results in a solution. I will award the entire prize at my discretion to those who help at a ratio of my determination.
UPDATE 6:30am 10/22/2013: I glad to see bonez656 post that this is happening to someone else. I am currently trying to acquire a complete dd image of the saturn/jupiter so I can reflash my beaglebone. If this works, I plan to offer 1/2 of the reward to bonez656 and the other half to whoever provides the dd image.
UPDATE 7am 10/22/2013: I received support from Emilia at KnC that may make a flash unncessary. The miner has an Emergency State that may allow me to access SSH and restore the bad file. I will attempt this first and follow up around 5pm EST with details.
UPDATE 4pm 10/23/2013: The miner is up and running! I'll be providing 0.25 BTC to bonez656 for providing comments that got me closest to the solution.
The solution actually came from KnC miner support:
  1. Shut down the power;
  2. Disconnect 12V power cables from all the ASIC boards;
  3. Turn the power on.
  4. The miner will start, and red LED will light up eventually - it is in errored state "No ASIC board found"
  5. SSH into the miner, restore factory configuration files (sample network.conf.factory and cgminer.conf.factory attached)
  6. sync (issue sync command in the command line interface)
  7. Turn the power off.
  8. Plug in back all the 12V cables to the ASIC boards.
  9. Turn the power on.
  10. Happy mining!

How To Mine Doge with Ubuntu 13.10. (Part 1, for AMD Graphics Cards)

I feel the community really needs a resource like this. Because if I had a Doge for every-time taught a newbie how to Mine on Ubuntu, I would be a very rich doge!
EDIT: Sorry if it looks funny, Reddit doesn't like the numbers I put in for some reason.
If you have Ubuntu you have likely not upgraded because you think you cant mine on 13.10, and while that has been true in the past, a few people have got it figured out. So feel free to upgrade. If you are not on Ubuntu, Seriously you should consider using it. Even if its just on an older desktop.
Alright, so lets get a few things clear, I am assuming that you just FRESHLY installed Ubuntu 13.10 x64 on your system. I am assuming that you have no drivers, and no miners. You will need at least a key board and a mouse. The guide will be done in several parts, this first part is for most AMD Graphics cards. If you have an Nvidia, or just want to mine with your CPU, please check back later for those guides!
When reading this guide, please remember that as I give you commands to type into the terminal, Anything between { and} must be included. Do not copy and paste the {}.
Lets get started, If you have not already done so, Install Ubuntu 13.10 64Bit From Here (
*1. Lets start by making sure you are up to date. Open up the terminal and enter this:
{sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade} 
Let that run for a bit.
*2. Once that has finished we are going to download some applications we will need:
{sudo apt-get install dh-make dh-modaliases execstack libxrandr2 libice6 libsm6 libfontconfig1 libxi6 libxcursor1 libgl1-mesa-glx libxinerama1 libqtgui4} 
*3. Once that has run its course we are going to install the ssh server. Remember this command is going to make your computer shut down. While it is shut down, carefully install your graphics cards. If you don't have any experience with this, I suggest you 3 minutes to watch this guide, because failure to install a graphics card the right way can destroy it.
{sudo apt-get install openssh-server sudo shutdown now} 
*4.Install your Card(s) and turn the computer back on.
*5. Make a new folder called "AMD DRIVERS123" inside of your download folder. Downoad the following 3 things into that folder. (1. AMD Drivers: (2. AMD APP SDK: (3. AMD ADL SDK:
*6. Ok, now we need to unzip and compile those drivers. So, open a terminal my right clicking inside of "AMD DRIVERS123". The enter this:
{unzip amd-catalyst*.zip chmod +x amd-catalyst*.run} {sudo ./amd-catalyst*.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/saucy} 
*7. Now we need to install the drivers. Enter the code exactly as you see it, don't worry, the first command will fail, we are expecting it too.
{sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb} {sudo apt-get -f install} {sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb} {sudo reboot} 
Your computer should now reboot.
(If this failed, you probibly need to remove the old drivers. Do this
{cd /etc/default sudo pico grub} 
Change the line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" 
Now save by pressing [CTRL+x]
{sudo update-grub} this will make the change perminent. {sudo reboot -n} Reboot with new settings. Once it starts back up try installing the new drivers again.) 
*8.GREAT! You are really on a roll! Now we need to update AtiConfig
{sudo aticonfig --initial --adapter=all} 
*9.Time to install the APP ADK:
{tar xvf AMD-APP-SDK*.tgz} {sudo ./} {sudo reboot} 
*10. WOOT! You are so close to diggin that sweet Doge!! Its time to download CGMiner. IMPORTANT NOTE! You need to get CGminer 3.7, IT IS THE ONLY ONE THAT WILL WORK. Do not get any older or newer, Just this. :
{sudo apt-get install git unzip git clone -b 3.7} 
*11. Ok, now go back to "AMD DRIVERS123", Unzip AMD SDL SDK 6.0. Once you have it unzipped, go the file called "include", open it up, copy everything inside, then go find CGminer. Copy these files into the CGminer file called ADL_SDK.
*12. To install CGminer, we are going to need a few things. Get all of these.
{sudo apt-get install build-essential autoconf libtool libcurl4-openssl-dev libncurses5-dev pkg-config libudev-dev} 
*13. Lets go ahead and compile CGminer.
{cd cgminer} {./} 
*14. Ok, when you did that, it told you GPU was not supported, time to fix it.
{./configure --enable-opencl --enable-scrypt} 
(if you did it right you should now get this: OpenCL...............: FOUND. GPU mining support enabled scrypt...............: Enabled ADL..................: SDK found, GPU monitoring support enabled)
*15. If everything has been good so far then
*16. MATHEMATICAL! Now lets get it set up to run a test.

*17. Now save by hitting [Control+x][y][Enter]
*18.Lastly lets CHmod

*20. Excellent! Now we have it installed, its time to pick 2-3 pools, and get accounts set up at each of them. I currently use These 2, and If I find another I like I'll update. If you have a really awesome pool you would like me to include on the list, feel free to message me.
Pools: (great community, server not super stable, but they have a chat. I hang out here a lot under the handle 'StrongBad' feel free to stop buy and ask questions) (Super stable pool, Great contests, super friendly, and they pay your miner a bonus if you find the block!)
Choose your pools, go to their sites and sign up. VERY IMPORTANT!!! Use different usernames and passwords for every mining site. If one site gets hacked, you don't want to give them a way to steal everything!!!!! Don't worry about the worker names and passwords being unique or complex tho, the most they can do with this is mine for you.
*21. Ok, now go to the CGminer folder, and open up a Terminal Window.
{sudo ./cgminer} 
This should start ./cgminer up with some really basic settings, and not pointed at any pool. Lets fix that: First press [p] to go to pool settings Now [A] and enter the information for the 1st pool. For instance if you are signing on for dogehouse: (Input server details: stratum+tcp:// Username: 'yourusername.workername password: 'yourpassword') If you got no errors, you did it right! Your miner should now connect and start to mine very slowly.
Now, do the same thing for all your other pools. the reason we do this is because Doge Coin pools are constantly being DDoS attacked, and this way your worker automatically switches over to a good pool if one go's down.
*22. time to save your current settings press [Enter] to get back out to the main menu, then [s] to bring up settings. Now press [W] to write a Config file. Name it DogeCoin.conf, and make sure to save it in the location it directs you too.
*23.OK! So, now we have everything set up to its basics. What you need to do now is sit down, and fine tune your Card(s). Its really early in the morning, and I need to get some sleep, I will add more on how to tune your card tomorrow in another post, and link it HERE:

Software Review: CGWatcher by Justin Malone

I've been using it for over a month and let me tell ya about it: CGWatcher.
So basically, you can run CGMiner and sometimes it'll crash. Sometimes if a GPU card gets above 100 C, it will not only blue-screen my machine (spontaneous shut-down), it will actually lose the 2nd GPU (something 'snaps' with the drivers). In the past 24 hours, I have reinstalled windows about 8 times or so.
Tools like CGWatcher have become essential. Another reason would be that if overheat is detected in CGMiner, it will shut down the GPU, then re-enable it after the target temperature is reached (on my machine 75 or 85 C), but wait!!! Did I say that CGMiner would re-enable the GPU? Because in reality, it only says it re-enabled the GPU, and it will just sit there at 0.0 hash rate. Until you restart it.
Tools like CGWatcher therefore have become essential to litecoin and bitcoin miners.
Earlier versions of CGWatcher didn't switch back and forth from litecoin to bitcoin mining easily. I do not think this was a software issue, I believe that you have to use CGMiner to output your Config File, then choose that in CGWatcher. If you try to add scrypt mining from inside CGWatcher, it didn't seem to work well.
Whatever it was, now it is no longer a problem (again, if it ever was) to switch from litecoin to bitcoin mining.
The developer has made a lot of look and feel improvements, and as we speak it actually seems to be adjusting difficulty automatically (although I didn't configure it, I'm sure it's in a config page somewhere and isn't entirely unwelcome just yet -- it's just a surprise).
I left anonymous feedback to the guy to OPEN SOURCE IT. DAMMIT. This is 2013, and things should be open-sourced, so that other developers can make their improvements. However, this is a free country, and I am using it, and it seems to be working great. Though y'all might like to give it a whirl yourselves.

[XFX 7970s] 1.345 MHash/sec, ~35C, ~450 Watts

Resurrected my old Bitcoin rig for some dedicated LTC mining, FINALLY got it running stable after some serious procrastination studying for finals -__-
GPUs: 2x XFX Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition (FX797GTDFC) flashed with this Gigabyte BIOS -
cgminer config:
Don't listen to anyone who says XFX GPUs are junk; maybe their firmware is, I won't argue that... but using the Gigabyte BIOS above I was able raise my hash rate to ~700 on each card @ 1000/1375 using around 450 watts, vs. ~550 on each card @ 1200/1500 using around 650 watts on the stock firmware!

Optional Beginner Guide to Litecoin: TESTED 12/7/2013

Plan B: BAMT Live USB
This option is a last resort, hopefully not necessary. Download BAMT from the link below and "dd" via terminal to USB formatted to FAT32 in gparted. You can install gparted in xubuntu by typing:
sudo apt-get install gparted 
Next, launch gparted and format your USB drive. Be careful not to format your HDDs! You might double-check the storage sizes as a reference in the upper-right drop-down menu.

Hello, I'm a new member of the Myriadcoin-Community and I made a mining guide for crypto-currency newbies over on my blog. I thought it would fit here as well, hoping that some newbie would discover it upon his quest for mining crypto-coins. (I hope it is ok, that I just copied it over)

I researched the technology behind Bitcoin, especially the blockchain, for the past week because it could have been helpful with my current research on electronic voting that I am doing for my project thesis. During that I was amazed by the simple and yet powerful ideas behind crypto-currency. I was tempted to invest some of my spare money (which is not much as an undergraduate) into crypto-currencies, but was appalled by the weak points of Bitcoin, that become apparent if one researches it. (Malleability, 51% Attacks, Selfish Mining, etc. If there is interest I can maybe try to scramble together an article going in detail about attacks on crypto-currencies)
Then I discovered Myriadcoin, which solved most of the problems I had with Bitcoin. Although I myself am quite new to the Myriadcoin-Community I present to you, the absolute crypto-coin beginners guide to Myriadcoin-Mining. The following guide is written for Windows, the process may be similar on Linux/Mac OS but is not 100% the same

Setting up your Wallet

Your Myriadcoin-wallet is very much like your everyday wallet. It holds your currency, and if you lose it your money is gone.
  1. Go to the Myriadcoin homepage
  2. Download The wallet for your OS. (Currently there are Windows and Mac OS Wallets)
  3. Unzip the downloaded
  4. Start the myriadcoin-qt.exe
After the installation is done you should see your wallet stating that your current funds are 0 MYR. At the beginning the wallet has to download all the information from the blockchain, which can take a while. You can see the progress at the bottom of the wallet. Upon pressing the receive-button at the top you will see your automatically generated address. This address can be used to receive Payment. You can generate as many adresses as you want. Under Settings you can Encrypt your wallet, which you probably should do if you plan to use it seriously. Keep in mind, that if you lose your password you have no means to get to your money. Under File you can create a backup and save it somewhere.

Getting to Mine

Mining is the process which verifies currency transactions between accounts. It is simultaneously the process which generates new coins up to a limit. (20 billion is the limit for MYR). To mine a block means to solve a cryptographic puzzle in form of a hash. Myriadcoin uses 5 of those hash-algorithms. If you are a complete newbie to mining and crypto-currencies chances are you do not have specialized Hardware. Because of that it probably is best if you mine using the skein, groestl or qubit algorithms. Do not be scared of the names, I will guide you trough. If you made your mind up which of those you want to use (just pick one, if you do not want to research them) you can go to this post. The following step by step guide is using the skein algorithm with the Modified cgminer and the cryptorus mining pool. The steps can differ slightly if you use a different algorithm or pool, but should be similar.
  1. Go to the above linked post and scroll down to the Standalone Miner Section
  2. Pick a miner. (I use the modified cgminer
  3. Got to the post again and scroll to the Pools Section
  4. Pick one of the mining Pools fitting your chosen algorithm. (I pick for this one)
  5. Go to the homepage and register if necessary (Lets say my name is Testhans)
  6. Once you registered you should look for the My Workers Option
  7. There create a new worker. (Lets say I make a worker with the name Myry and the password 1234)
  8. Now unzip the Miner you downloaded
  9. Go to the folder of the miner and create a new textfile that you name run.bat
  10. Go to your pool-website and look for the stratum address. (Can be usually found on the startpage, in this my case stratum+tcp://
The run.bat should look as follows:
name_of_miner.exe -o stratum-address -u YouName.Workername -p Workerpassword (For some algorithms you have to set the algorithm as an option too)
This is how my config looks with the examples above:
cgminer.exe --skein -o stratum+tcp:// -u Testhans.Myry -p 1234
Save the run.bat and you should be able to start the miner through double clicking. A console-window should open displaying the progress. Every time you find a share a message saying something along the lines of "Accepted 214sabc5fe 4/2" should be displayed.
You can enter your Myriadcoin-address inside the Account-Options of your pool, so you can receive your share of the coins you mined. Typically you have to arrange the transaction yourself. Usually the miner can take a lot of options to optimize the amount it can mine, but as a newbie you are likely to break more than you get out of it. The standard-configuration of miner-tools is in most cases pretty good allready.

Help with getting things to start mining scrypt currencies (using raspberry pi 2 , gridseed asic miner , & cgminer) . . .

Here's what I have & will be using (I already have the cables & power) :
raspberry pi 2 Gridseed ASIC Miner for Litecoin and Bitcoin Mining --- 4 of these cgminer
[ I followed this example for setting things up : it is my understanding that any altcoin you wish to setup mining for , is done in this similar fashion ]
I want to do scrypt cryptocurrency mining , I just want to understand how this is done ....
( I know there's a lot of tutorials out there & great vids , and I've done a lot of reading on all this matter , but I can't seem to get things working right , please help / advise )
  1. if I solo mine , what is the correct port # to use here (and is the below command formatted correctly more-or-less) :
sudo ./cgminer -o stratum+tcp:localhost:#### -u Username.Workername -p yourworkerpassword --gridseed-options freq=850
( I understand I need to create my own pool , a pool of 1 , is considered to be solo-mining , correct ? How do I do this ? )

And I understand there is some kind of Config files relevant that I should modify accordingly to set things up with my mining solo , right ? How is it done & where do I find this config files ??

Hey you. Yes you with the eyes. Are you new to the world of crypto coin mining? Have no idea what a dogecoin is? Want to start mining dogecoins today and just can't seem to figure it out or get it to work?
Well have I got much help for you! About a week ago, I finally started mining after two painful days of trying to get it to work. Basically, I was a total noob and didn't really understand anything about mining in general. Because of the joy mining has brought me so far I am writing this guide to hopefully help out new members or other total noobs.
It's safe to say I've been bitten by the dogecoin bug. I started out with a measly 50 khash/sec and made approximately 10 coins in 12 hours. * My reaction when I finally got my miner to work * Reaction cont.
Now I'm up to 500 khash/sec after figuring out all the 'nuts and bolts' of mining. wow...such optimization...many hash
I'll break this guide down into three categories: Detailed Info, CGMiner Config for AMD Cards, and lastly, CUDAMiner for Nvidia cards.
Detailed Info very
A dogecoin is a type of crypto currency that is traded against bitcoins in a crypto currency marketplace.
You can earn dogecoins by contributing hashes (computing power) to a mining pool to help find a block.
There are a certain amount of dogecoins that will be released. These coins are released in the form of a block ranging in quantity of 1-1,000,000 doge coins. It is worth noting that the total quantity of coins per block will soon be halved to just 500,000.
Things you will need to mine: * dogecoin wallet * computer with a GPU * an account with a mining pool * a worker for the mining pool * mining software
1) [](Download the doge coin wallet and install it)
2) Turn off your computer's anti-virus software and allow the dogecoin wallet through your fire wall. *VERY IMPORTANT
3) Run the dogecoin wallet and let it sync with the network. It is important to note that this can take a short amount of time or even up to 12 hours to complete. Just be patient. Use that time to research mining more.

Once your wallet has synced with the network, it is time to sign up with a mining pool. Think of a mining pool as a virtual supercomputer that is made up of many smaller computers connected together. This pool or 'super computer' allows for greater processing power. More processing power = greater chance of the pool finding a block.

Finding a pool

Be careful when running Java and/or entering the usepass on sites. There are phishing sites out there that imitate other pools to steal your data.
When accessing a mining pool, DO NOT follow any redirects, always access the site directly and check the URL. For extra security, make sure you're using https://
Don't run Java!" <--- not my words, but very good warning to take into consideration
1) Perform a quick google search or use the links in the side bar to find a pool!
2) For this example I will be using (I in no way, shape, or form endorse this particular pool. It was the first one I clicked. Feel free to use any pool you want, as the sites are all the same.)
3) You're going to want to click "Sign Up" in the menu on the left of the page. After clicking, sign up for an account.
4) After signing up for an account, log into your account. (For the sake of my example my mining pool site username will be "Shibe")
5) Now we will create a pool worker. Click "My Workers" in the menu on the left side of the page.
6) Choose a worker name and worker password and click submit. *NOTE THE WORKER NAME IS NOT THE SAME AS YOUR ACCOUNT USERNAME
7) For the sake of the example my workers name is "worker1" and the password is "x". *Note capitalization matters so don't forget it.
Now we will download a mining software and configure it to mine.
Before we do that I want to clarify what the info we will be using to configure our miner is.
1) Click "Getting Started"
In my example pool under getting started you will see this in "Step 3":
  1. Configure your miner.
    Settings for Stratum (recommended): STRATUM: stratum+tcp:// PORT: 3336 Username: Weblogin.Worker Password: Worker Password
If you use a command-line miner, type:
./cgminer --scrypt -o stratum+tcp:// -u Weblogin.Worker -p Worker password

Final Step Regarding Mining Pools
We need to add our payment address to our mining pool account so that we can receive the dogecoins we help mine.
1) Click "Edit Account" on the menu on the left side of the page.
2) Scroll down until you see "PAYMENT ADDRESS".
3) Minimize the webpage and go to your doge coin wallet.
4) In your dogecoin wallet click the "Much Receive" tab.
5) You will see the Label "Default" with an "Address" composed of a long random string of letters and numbers.

*Note AMD cards are much better for mining than Nvidia. It's just the way it is!
We will be using cgminer to mine dogecoins with our AMD cards.
While there are newer versions of cgminer avaliable you're going to want to download cgminer version 3.7.2 because any higher versions do not support GPU mining.
1) Make sure your AMD drivers are up to date.
2) This version of cgminer is now only available on gitub at this url. The option to download the zip file in on the bottom left right side column.
3) After downloading the file, extract its contents to a folder on your desktop.
4) Before we do that go to Control Panel Folder Options View select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" and click apply.
BEFORE YOU TRY THE BELOW, RUN THE APPLICATION AND INPUT THE SERVER URL:PORT (stratum+tcp:// "enter" USERNAME (Shibe.worker1) "enter" and PASSWORD (x) "enter".
*If the application runs without giving you errors hit the [S] and select "create config file" and hit enter.
5) If that didn't work, we will make a .conf file that allows cgminer to run correctly.
6) Now go to the folder you extracted cgminer into.
7) Right-click anywhere in the folder and select "New" Text document.
8) Right-click the new text document you just created and select "Edit".
9) Copy and paste the following into that new text document leaving no space at the top and enter the appropriate pool information accordingly. Noticed I used my STRATUM info from my example.

10) Click save-as Save as type, "All files" and rename the document to: cgminer.conf
11) Click save and run program.
12) If it still doesn't work try changing the intensity to a lower number or changing the workspace value to 64.
Everything should work now. If I have made any errors or if there are easier ways of doing this please let me know so that I can edit this. This is just what worked for me.

9) Copy and paste this to the top line of the blank text document leaving no space in front and input the appropriate url, username and password from whatever pool you use. (I will be using my example pool info stated earlier in this post):

10) Click save-as Save as type, "All files" and rename the document to: Launch.bat
11) Click save.
12) Double click the Launch.bat file you just created to run the program.
13) Wait for the program to auto-tune your settings and then it will start mining automatically.
Everything should work now. If I have made any errors or if there are easier ways of doing this please let me know so that I can edit this. This is just what worked for me.

How to fix crashes and low hash rate on my new scrypt rig?

I need help to get past two major problems in my scrypt mining machine (see my config at bottom).

1 problem is system crashes during mining, even with low hash rate

2 problem is the low hash rates. 280x running at 400 k/hs and R9 290 at 180-400 k/hs

So far I have tried mining on Windows 8.1, Litecoin BAMT Linux and SMOS Linux with much luck. On Windows 8.1 I have gone through tons of AMD Driver versions from 13.1, 13.11 beta v9.4, 14.1 beta, 13-12, and bunch of other versions. Even tried couple of DDU clean ups. I have also tried different iners like cgminer, bfgminer, etc. Note on windows 8.1 I can't see GPU temp either. However, the hangs and low hash rates persist. One of the main issues is I can't get around play around with miner settings due crashes.
On linux at least I can see GPU temps. But from my testing the system still hangs when running at 400 k/hs on my two R9 280x or 180 k/hs on R9 290. My setting for above on cgminer was (2x 280x and 1x 290 at the end):
cgminer.exe --scrypt -I 12,12,12 -shaders 2048,2048,2560 --auto-fan --target-temp 65
Here is my hardware config:
MSI Z77A-GD65 Motherboard(highly recommended on board)
Intel Celeron G1620
Corsair RM 850W
G.SKILL 8 GB (4GB x 2)
Sapphire Radeon R9 280x
MSI Gaming R9 280x
XFX R9 290x R9-290A-ENFC
Anyone got any suggestions on what to try next? Seems like very hard to mine effectively, for me atleast...

Cannot get over 450kH/s with my 7970..please help

I'm able to hit 730Mh/s bitcoin mining with my Asus Matrix Platinum [email protected] 1250mhz core/1725mhz memory...but for some reason i cannot get over 450kH/s reliably litecoin mining.
Using the configs they use in
Using either CGMiner or GUIMiner - none of the 7970 configs are very good for me
The highest stable memory i can get is using 0.57 rule, ive tried a core speed 984mhz..still doesnt help too much. Anyone have other configs i can try? I'm using as my pool.
EDIT: Also using the newest 13.3 Beta drivers...i wonder if this has something to do with it..or maybe i should change pools..

Having issues with my cgminer config, any tips?

I got cgminer working, but I am pulling a measly 8kh/s. Running ubuntu 12.04, with a GTX 560 Ti gc card. On this resource, it says I should be passing the -i and 0 args, but I get an error when I do that, are those windows args? Any tips on how I can optimise my config file based on my card? If I use the example config from this tutorial, I get an Too many values passed to set temp cut error, and it force closes. If I don't use the example config file cgminer runs, but my kh/s is very very low. Any tips for a noob would be much appreciated.

Mining experiences

I present to you my journey with Bitcoin mining.
About 2 or so years ago a somewhat-more-nerdy-than-me buddy of mine ropes me in to Bitcoins. I installed the client in a few places and let them CPU solo mine for a while. After a few weeks of nothing, I got bored and forgot about it.
Then in March this year, I jumped on the bandwagon again (all the while kicking myself for not sticking to it). This time, I figured out BAMT, played on deepbit for a while, learned enough linux to make p2pool run, and generally tweeked with configs in cgminer to make my GPU miners hum (and overheat).
Around April, I got suckered in by the BFL pitch and ordered a couple Jalepeno's. After "burning in" my stuff for a good 6 months, I guess they felt guilty and decided to ship them to me.
So now I've got these things hooked up to a laptop and the 10GH/s looks awesome after GPU minng (4 GPU's @ 750MH/s ea). The pool rewards tell a different story however (~.002/day). I've purchased a r-pi and plan to see how that'll play out with the ASIC's.
The GPU's have been re-tasked to LTC mining. We'll see how that goes.
I've come to the conclusion that while the steady and predictable payout of a BTC pool is smart, I'd like to play the lottery and just let my BFL's solo mine for a bit. I mean, how awesome would it be to check it one day and see the line "Found block for pool 0!".
Then again, the number of natural 20's I've rolled over the years is shockingly low. Still fun to dream. I imagine I'll return to the pool eventually with my head hung low mumbling "stupid blockchain"
TL;DR - mined bitcoins with different tech over time.

Tuning help requested!

Hello fellow Shibes!
I've been mining on my dual GPU rig and thinking I was doing quite well until someone noticed that my hashrate was significantly lower than expected and suggested I take a look at my settings. I couldn't see anything wrong, but I'm always looking for suggestions to improve the hashrate in the box.
I'm running two HD5850 Radeons on Debian and am getting the below hashrate reported by cgminer v. 3.1.1:

GPU1 and GPU2 are the Radeon cards, GPU0 is the onboard card being used for monitoring and admin of the server.
My intensity for both cards is set to 11, if I set it to 12, I start getting hardware (HW) errors, if set to 10, then the hashrate is effectively halved.
I start off cgminer with the following parameters: cgminer --scrypt --auto-gpu --auto-fan -d 1 -d 2
I will admit that I'm not too familiar with cgminer, I bought this rig from a friend after GPU mining went unprofitable for Bitcoin, but it was just in time to start mining the sweet sweet Doge. :)
If needed, I can post my config (less my pool data) or I can obtain whatever info you may need to help me.

Sapphire Dual-X 7950 - Rejected (Below Difficulty)?

Hi everyone! I'm new to bitcoin mining, and i'm trying to get a config to mine using cgminer with my gpu (in the title). Right now i'm using this config (using a bat file) to get started:
cgminer.exe --scrypt -o stratum+tcp:// -u Workername -p pass --gpu-powertune=20 -I 19
but i am getting just a lot of "reject" (below difficulty). I really have no idea how could i get the config to work properly. Can you please help me? Thanks a lot!
